Chai is a popular spiced tea from India, made with black tea and a blend of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. This homemade chai spice mix is a great way to bring that signature chai flavor to your favorite foods—think baked goods, oatmeal, desserts or your warm cozy drinks like lattes or cappucinos.

I made this blend heavier on cinnamon for a sweeter taste, and used cardamom and ginger for that spicy masala chai taste. I also added a touch of black pepper for a subtle kick, but feel free to leave it out if you prefer a milder flavor. This is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.

We don’t usually use allspice in traditional chai, so I skipped it, but if you enjoy it, you can add about ½ tablespoon.

While this chai spice mix works beautifully for enhancing baked goods, oatmeal, and desserts, I recommend using a dedicated chai masala powder for making authentic masala chai—it makes all the difference! If you’re craving a cozy cup, check out my Masala Chai Recipe.

Start by gathering your spices—cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and black pepper

To make this chai spice mix, I buy individual packs of ground cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. This makes the process super easy—no grinding or extra prep needed. Just measure out each spice according to the recipe.

For the black pepper, I always grind a fresh batch when I need it. Freshly ground black pepper has a stronger flavor—far spicier and more peppery than pre-ground store-bought versions. That said, feel free to use whatever works best for you!

Once you have all the ground spices ready, combine them in a bowl and mix thoroughly until they’re evenly blended. Make sure there are no clumps.

Transfer the mix to an airtight jar, and you’ve got your homemade chai spice blend ready!

Recipe Tips

  • This chai spice mix will keep fresh in an airtight jar for up to 3 months.
  • Keep your spices in a cool dark place, away from sunlight to extend shelf life.
